Cats

Cat owner’s responsibilities

Licence

All outdoor cat owners or keepers must ensure that their cat has an annual licence payable on the first day of July each year.

Annual licence fee

  • for an outdoor cat that is spayed or neutered and which bears a microchip or a tattoo: $15
  • for an outdoor cat that is spayed or neutered, but does not bear a microchip or tattoo: $20
  • for an outdoor cat that is not spayed or neutered as a result of a medical exemption (a cat that is 10 years or older or has a medical exemption from the veterinarian attesting to the fact that the cat cannot be spayed or neutered): $25

Should the cat identification tag be lost or destroyed, the person to whom it has been issued shall present the receipt for payment and pay a $5 dollar fee for a replacement cat identification tag.

To obtain or renew your licence, go to Côte Saint-Luc City Hall (5801 Cavendish Blvd.) between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm on weekdays.

Cat identification tag

The owner or keeper of an outdoor cat must show proof that the outdoor cat has been spayed or neutered and provide the information required to process the registration of a cat, including, but not limited to, the name and address of the owner, the breed, gender, colour, name of the outdoor cat and the microchip or tattoo number if the outdoor cat is so identified in order to be issued a cat identification tag.

Abandoned cats

No owner or keeper of a cat shall abandon a cat under any circumstances.

Côte Saint-Luc Cats Committee

Who we are

Mike Cohen is the City Councillor Responsible for Animal Protection and Diane Liebling chairs this committee. We are a group of volunteers whose mission is to reduce the number of homeless/community cats.

What we do

We Trap, Neuter, Release and Maintain these cats- “TNRM”.

How

When we receive calls from the resident, we work with them to trap the cat. We then bring it to the vet to be neutered, vaccinated and dewormed. After a period of recuperation, the cat is released back in the spot where he was captured or put up for adoption if he can be socialized. We do not take the cat away permanently- another cat will simply fill the void. Even if the resident who alerted us to this cat is not feeding him, it is likely he is receiving a food source nearby.

Our goal is to have no more homeless cats.

Where

We operate in Côte Saint-Luc.

Why

Because people do not sterilize their cats and the overpopulation of homeless cats is out of control.

What can you do?

  • Spay and neuter your cat. This is vital to help reduce the number of feral cats.
  • Report homeless cats. Send an e-mail to [email protected] or find us on Facebook if you see a cat that does not have a collar and you believe is homeless.
  • Purchase a licence for your outdoor cat if you are a Cote Saint-Luc resident. They are available at City Hall (5801 Cavendish Blvd.) for a nominal charge.
  • Become a volunteer. We are always looking for people committed to the health and welfare of cats.
  • Donate to the CSL Cat Committee so that the number of cats sterilized can be increased. Donation receipts will be issued for donations of $25 or more.
