Business of the month: Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary Coffee and Gift Shop

The Côte Saint-Luc Local Commerce Committee is pleased to recognize the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary Coffee and Gift Shops for the month of December 2024

Councillor Mike Cohen, responsible for Local Commerce, was joined by Mayor Mitchell Brownstein to make the presentation, tour the premises and talk to Auxiliary officials, staff and volunteers

Since the hospital’s inception in 1909 by members of the Jewish community, Mount Sinai has always stood for excellence. Today, the 107-bed hospital is a state-of-the-art institution, specializing in respiratory, palliative and long-term care, accredited by Accreditation Canada.

Founded in 1933, the Auxiliary represents a large group of dedicated men and women who give numerous volunteer hours to help in the gift shop, coffee shop and with many fundraising events to reach its financial goals.

The “Sinai Café” is exclusively run by the Auxiliary. Volunteer Ken Morrison is the chairperson responsible for hiring the two part-time employees as well overseeing all purchases. This non-profit coffee shop serves as an intimate place where staff, patients/residents and family members can gather for breakfast, lunch and snacks. The Café offers all kinds of breakfast items such as eggs, toast, danish and cereal. They make their own soups, sandwiches such as falafel, tuna or cheese, and other specialty menu items for lunch, and they are always serving coffee with a smile!

The Auxiliary Gift Shop is a little gem in the hospital, run by volunteer Joyce Morrison and helped by her daily volunteers. People come from all over to buy beautiful and well-priced merchandise. The shop is well known for its holiday chocolates, Judaica from Israel, sale of Mah Jongg cards, a vast array of tableware and more recently, beautiful clothing and accessories. Joyce makes sure that there is a little bit of everything, including slippers and other necessities for patients and residents, who are among our most frequent visitors.
