As part of a federally funded habitat restoration project, the Greater Montreal Ecological Committee (CEGM), a long-time City partner, has installed and digitally mapped 12 birdhouses across three Côte Saint-Luc parks to help monitor local bird populations and support biodiversity. Four birdhouses were installed in each of Ashkelon Woods, Nathan Shuster Park and Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park. Each birdhouse has been assigned a unique identification code and added to a geographic information system database, allowing environmental specialists to track locations and monitor activity over time.
The birdhouses are part of a broader ecological restoration initiative led by CEGM, a non-profit environmental organization that has been working with Côte Saint-Luc since 2019. The work is funded through a five-year federal environmental grant that supports habitat restoration projects in Ashkelon Woods, Nathan Shuster Park and Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park. The program includes native tree planting, invasive-species removal, wildlife habitat improvements, environmental surveys and long-term ecological monitoring.
By monitoring occupancy at each birdhouse and tracking activity over time, environmental specialists will be able to assess how birds are responding to restoration efforts and gather data that can help guide future conservation projects.
