New water filter recycling drop-off at Public Works

Côte Saint-Luc, May 28, 2025—The City of Côte Saint-Luc is now accepting used Brita-brand water filters at the Public Works Building (7001 Mackle Rd.) as part of a new recycling initiative.

Residents can drop off used Brita-brand filters in the designated bin located inside the Public Works Building during regular hours.

Collected Brita-brand filters will be sent to TerraCycle, an organization that specializes in hard-to-recycle items. TerraCycle breaks down the components for reuse: the plastic casings are recycled into new plastic products, and the carbon elements are repurposed for other industrial uses. This helps reduce landfill waste and gives these materials a second life.

For the moment, only Brita-brand filters are included in this recycling project. All other brands of used water filters should be placed in the trash (black bin) after use.

QUOTATIONS

“Côte Saint-Luc is proud to offer residents another meaningful way to reduce waste. By collecting Brita-brand water filters for proper recycling, we’re sending a little bit less to landfill and reusing the plastic in their filters.” — Mayor Mitchell Brownstein

“We know residents want to do the right thing, and this new drop-off point makes it possible to reduce how much we throw away. Instead of tossing used Brita-brand filters in the trash, people can now bring them to Public Works where we ensure they are responsibly recycled.” — Councillor Steven Erdelyi, responsible for the environmental portfolio

“Thank you to Public Works Director Beatice Newman and her team who brought forward this initiative. Côte Saint-Luc keeps looking for ways to improve and this another step in the right direction.” — Councillor Sidney Benizri, responsible for the Public Works portfolio
