The City of Côte Saint-Luc has received a $21,000 grant from the Government of Canada New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) to launch the Tales & Travel Memories library program for persons living with dementia, which promises to increase social and cognitive engagement.
Developed in 2013 by librarian Mary Beth Reidner, whose husband was diagnosed with dementia, Tales & Travel Memories has been implemented in many libraries and care institutions across North America. Côte Saint-Luc is excited to bring this enriching program to its community, offering seniors a stimulating activity that fosters social interaction and memory recall.
Using travel as inspiration, participants recall memories, verbalize thoughts, and connect emotionally with their caregivers. Caregivers also report improved relationships with their loved ones through the program.
Beginning in late August, Tales & Travel Memories will run in 6- or 8-week sessions. Each week, participants will explore a new country through books, folktales, music, souvenirs, and videos. Travelers will take turns reading aloud from a folktale, legend, or myth associated with the chosen location. They will also read from a list of interesting facts. Finally, they will browse through carefully selected books that spark memories and conversations with volunteers and library staff.
The program will be open to 8 to 10 seniors with dementia and their caregivers. Caregivers must attend. Multiple sessions will be scheduled to reach as many participants as possible.
Katie Bezaire, the Seniors’ Services Librarian, will lead the program, with support from volunteers and the Alzheimer’s Society or the Alzheimer’s Group Inc. Volunteers will help plan, assemble travel kits, prepare food samples, and provide one-on-one attention during sessions.
The $21,000 grant from the Government of Canada will fund country kits, training, promotion, and staff time. Côte Saint-Luc remains committed to creating meaningful experiences for seniors and their caregivers. Tales & Travel Memories is a testament to that dedication.
