Thieves operating in pairs or small groups will attempt to distract a person walking to their car in a shopping centre parking lot, by asking for help or pointing out something on the ground. Sometimes the thieves may even have a small child or baby with them. In other instances, the thieves will try to get a person in their car to exit the car claiming they need directions or dropping something on the ground. Once the person exits their car, an accomplice swiftly enters the vehicle to steal purses, wallets, or other valuables left on the seat. While thieves can target anyone, they tend to target seniors.
Safety Tips to Protect Yourself:
- Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in parking lots.
- Secure Valuables: Keep purses and wallets on your person; avoid leaving them on car seats.
- Lock Your Vehicle: Always lock your car, even if stepping away briefly.
- Be Cautious with Strangers: If approached, maintain a safe distance and be wary of distractions.
