On Friday, May 9, 2025, between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m., there will be a warning siren test lasting at least three minutes at several industrial sites across the Island of Montreal, including the Parmalat (Lactalis Canada) factory on Saint-Jacques St., located just south of Côte Saint-Luc. Due to atmospheric conditions that affect how sound travels, residents in Côte Saint-Luc—especially those in southern areas—may hear the siren.
In the event of an actual emergency at a factory, the siren would alert people who are outdoors to immediately seek shelter. Those indoors would receive information via other means, such as radio, television, social media, or automated phone alerts.
About the tests
The Agglomeration of Montreal, in collaboration with factories handling hazardous materials, is conducting this annual drill to:
- Raise public awareness of what to do in the event of a toxic release,
- Ensure the proper functioning of the sirens,
- Test the readiness of emergency responders.
Each of the nine participating factories will activate their siren following a pre-set schedule. The sound will rise and fall and last approximately three minutes. People who are indoors may not hear the siren, which is normal.
What to do if this were a real emergency
- If this were an actual toxic release emergency, residents should:
- Enter the nearest building immediately.
- Close all doors, windows, and ventilation.
- Avoid going to pick up children at school or daycare.
- Keep phone lines free.
- Follow instructions from official sources.
