Statement on the mass murder of Jewish Australians in the City of Sydney

Australian Jews joyously celebrating the first night of Chanukkah in the City of Sydney were murdered today in an act of terrorism perpetrated by radical Islamists. At least 12 people are dead and another 29 hospitalized.

The City of Côte Saint-Luc grieves for those lost and their families.

Radical Islamism is a clear and present danger to Canada and its allies. Even as reports from Australia were coming in, Germany reported that it had arrested five men who were planning on ramming cars into a Christmas market in southern Germany.

The government of Canada and its allies must take ongoing and decisive action to identify funding of radical Islamist organizations, identify radicals Islamist persons and use our existing laws to remove them from our streets or if required from our country.

If people of any faith, peace loving Canadians, cannot safely hold community events then something fundamental has been lost in our free societies.

The City of Cote Saint-Luc will do everything in its power to ensure the safety of our residents and community institutions. We will not bow to terrorists, and we will continue to stand firmly for security, freedom of religion, and the values that bind our society together.
