Canada is in a crisis. The arson that occured overnight on June 5, 2026, at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Westmount, is the latest act in a sustained and escalating wave of violence and intimidation targeting the Jewish community in Montreal, across Canada, and throughout the Western world.
We are relieved that Montreal police quickly made an arrest. But an arrest alone does not close this conversation. Whether this proves to be the act of a lone individual or part of something encouraged, influenced, or directed by hostile foreign actors, the response from every level of government must be clear: attacks on Jewish institutions are a national security matter and must be treated as such.
There have been deeply troubling reports and allegations in Canada and abroad involving hostile foreign actors and attacks or surveillance targeting Jewish institutions. CSIS has confirmed that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains one of the main perpetrators of foreign interference against Canada, and that hatred of Jews could motivate individuals, whether acting alone or directed from abroad, to commit acts of violence.
In the aftermath of last night’s attack in Westmount, the City of Côte Saint-Luc has been in contact with our local police station to discuss increased police patrols in the area. In combination with our enhanced security measures, our own Public Security agents will continue to protect institutions across the city.
The systems we have in place are working. Police, Public Security, community institutions, and residents are sharing information, remaining alert, and responding quickly. Our collective vigilance is making a difference. The City is also working with Federation CJA to help ensure that concerns are communicated, risks are monitored, and appropriate measures are taken.
We remind all residents that if you see anything suspicious, at any hour, call 9-1-1. The dispatcher will assess the situation and deploy police as required. When that call comes in, Côte Saint-Luc Public Security will also be notified.
