Statement regarding the release of hostages

The City of Côte Saint-Luc welcomes the news that all 20 of the remaining living hostages in Gaza have been freed and returned to Israel after more than two years in captivity. This long-awaited development brings immense relief to the families who have endured unimaginable pain since the attacks of October 7, 2023.

We join communities around the world in expressing hope that this progress will lead to a lasting peace. Much will depend, however, on whether Hamas relinquishes power in Gaza and whether a technocratic government can be established to ensure stability and prevent future violence. Côte Saint-Luc also hopes that the international community will continue to apply firm and sustained pressure on all parties to ensure that the 20-point peace plan can come to fruition, allowing Israelis and Palestinians alike to live in safety and dignity.

We recognize the immense loss of innocent life as well in Gaza and mourn for all civilians who have suffered during this conflict.

We also remember with sorrow the 28 victims whose bodies remain in Gaza and who are expected to be repatriated to Israel and all those murdered during the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7.
