Protect Your Home: Take Action Against Basement Flooding

Spring is here, and with it comes heavier rain and snowmelt, two of the most common causes of basement flooding. Even homes that have never flooded before are at risk.

The good news: there are practical steps you can take right now to reduce that risk. Small actions today can prevent major damage and costly repairs down the road. Here are some things to check:

  1. Install a backwater valve to stop wastewater from flowing back into your home
  2. Seal any cracks in your foundation walls or floor
  3. Install or repair window wells and covers
  4. Check and maintain your French drain and sump pump
  5. Clean your gutters at least once a year and extend downspouts 1.5 metres from your foundation
  6. Slope the ground away from your home to redirect water
  7. Make sure your basement floor drain is clear and accessible
  8. Keep your driveway drain clean and functioning
  9. Add water detectors near appliances and know where your water shutoff valve is
