Council voted to continue participating in the collective legal action brought by bilingual municipalities regarding several contested elements of An Act respecting French, the official and common language of Québec (often referred to as Bill 96). The resolution confirms that Côte SaintLuc will remain a coplaintiff and continue to share legal costs with other bilingual municipalities participating in the challenge. The legal mandate remains with Grey Casgrain s.e.n.c., the firm representing the coalition.
The purpose of the action is to seek clarification on how Bill 96 affects municipalities with recognized bilingual status under the Charter of the French Language, especially in areas related to public administration, the issuing of documents, and the capacity to provide services in English. For Côte Saint-Luc, maintaining bilingual status is essential for ensuring accessibility of services for its residents, many of whom rely on English language communication in civic life.
