We have received several reports from Côte Saint-Luc residents about what we have reason to believe is an example of “The Attic Scam.”
According to the information we received, you get a call on your phone from a number beginning with 514-400-****. The person on the line (i.e., the scammer) claims that her company is working with the city’s “Housing Office” to offer a free attic inspection. This is false. The City has no such partnership and no division called “Housing Office.”
The scammer tries to book an appointment for the next day, when a supposed “expert” will visit your home and tell you how to improve the insulation in your attic. If you receive this call, please hang up.
There are a number of scams that use this strategy, where the company claims to be working with the City and wants to inspect something. So, please be skeptical if you receive such a call. We recommend that if you have doubts, hang up and call the City at 514-485-6800 to verify.
By the way, sometimes scammers may ring your doorbell. You don’t have to open your door to someone you don’t know. In fact, Côte Saint-Luc by-law 2470 prohibits door-to-door solicitation of any kind—even if it is a reputable company. Therefore, please contact Côte Saint-Luc Public Security immediately at 514-485-6960 to report it. This will give our agents an opportunity to intercept the person.
