Am I allowed to use a generator?

Yes, during power outages, residents are permitted to use generators, provided they meet
municipal guidelines described below and in bylaws 2217-62 (PDF) and 2593 (PDF).

Do I need a permit to have a generator?

Permanent generators and generators that require installation must be installed on a
concrete base and a permit is required

Small portable generators, however, do not require a permit. But they must comply with all applicable regulations.

Where must I place the generator?

For single-family and two-family homes:

  • Generators must be placed outside, in the rear yard and at a minimum distance of 1.52m (5ft) from any property line.
  • Permanent generators must be installed on a concrete slab/base and must not be visible from a public road.

For all other uses:

  • Generators must be located inside the main building or in a penthouse for mechanical equipment, provided it is set back by 2.44 m (8 ft.) From the perimeter of the roof.

What are other considerations regarding a generator?

  • There is a maximum of one (1) generator per property.
  • Diesel-powered generators are prohibited.
  • TAll generators must comply with the noise provisions for mechanical equipment set out in chapter 3 of Construction bylaw 2593.
