Environmental Technician

The City of Côte Saint-Luc is a dynamic municipality on the island of Montreal with a population of approximately 33,000. Principal Function

The work consists of carrying out various studies of a technical nature involving the performance of paraprofessional tasks within the context of the implementation, realization and follow-up of various projects including the management of household waste, the management of recyclable and/or hazardous waste, the management of snow as well as other programs of an environmental nature (management of “BPC”s of “CFC”, use of dangerous materials at work).

Details of position

1. Do the follow-up, that is of statements, verifications and reminders concerning the snow, waste and separate collection contracts that are managed by the regions of the Public Works Department.

2. Ensure that the work related to the contracts that are managed by the division is carried out in accordance with the contract conditions, regulations and practices in use.

3. Compile and process, with the aid of computer software, the statistics (weighings, number, volumes, etc.), gathered by him or by the contractors, notably those related to the management of waste and recycling waste and to the management of snow. Develop computer applications from the software when required.

4. Participate in the selection of methods for sampling specific data and adjust them to the conditions of the land. Determine by himself the methods of sampling data in situations that represent less risk.

5. Analyze when necessary, the operational techniques and methods as well as the new equipment used by the contractors and municipal employees and make the necessary modifications for their optimization. Make appropriate recommendations and ensure that the established standards are respected.

6. Participate in the development of follow-up methods for various projects, analyze the data and create evaluation reports of projects in the form of text, table and statement

7. Evaluate projects or parts of projects and make verbal or written recommendations.

8. Develop the norms and standards of work related to, among others, the collection and pick-up of recycling waste, the handling and storage of solid and hazardous waste and the operations of snow removal.

9. Adapt or write contract conditions and reports involving the various categories of the environment (handling and storage of hazardous waste, snow removal operation, etc.).

10. Do preliminary sketches, cross sections, master plans and tables necessary for the comprehension of reports.

11. Design, starting from components and observations gathered by himself or supplied by others, the plans, estimates and specifications of projects, and this, in consultation with the trade professionals. Use as required the software for computer-assisted design.

12. Participate generally, along with the professionals that he is in charge of assisting, in the various works of planning, designing, controlling and surveillance of projects and represent them as required.

13. Assist, as required, the professionals within the context of optimization studies or follow-up of operations (weight analysis, measurings, control of salt and abrasives utilization, exploitation costs of snow disposal sites, etc.).

14. Represent the City in citizens groups, through the schools or information kiosks, by preparing an exposé and hosting meetings that deal with subjects that are treated by the division or by asserting the validity of the policies and programs of the division.

15. Treat the complaints in a manner so as to maintain a climate of amicable relations.

16. Intervene on site, as required, during environmental urgencies of the territory (dumping, illegal tipping, etc.), in order to rapidly evaluate the gravity of a situation and propose recommendations regarding the standards of intervention required for public security.

17. Participate in the development or develop training and awareness programs regarding environmental protection for all the parties concerned.

18. Guide and direct regularly company employees or City employees in the accomplishment of the jobs related to the nature of the work and ensure that the work performed meets the selected objectives.

19. Communicate daily with the foremen and managers to exchange information and obtain their collaboration; interact with different external intervening parties (community groups, citizens, property owners) to solicit their interest and participation in the different projects and programs of the division.

20. Use, if needed, various measurement equipment to accomplish certain tasks related the job (explosimeter, sound survey meter, etc.).

21. Use, if needed, various office equipment, to accomplish certain tasks related to the job, while using the appropriate programs.

22. Carry out any other related tasks.

 

Requirements:

  • Education: Specialized College Diploma, appropriate sector and profile
  • Experience: 2 years of similar work experience permitting the holder of the position to become familiar with this line of work.
  • Other: Fluently bilingual written and spoken

Working hours: 35 hours, Monday to Friday
