Experts share their knowledge of oriental rugs in Côte Saint-Luc

Côte Saint-Luc, March 8, 2010 - Montreal appraisers and authorities on oriental carpets, Harold Bedoukian and Janice Summers, will speak about the unique history, design and techniques of oriental rug weaving at the Côte Saint-Luc Public Library on Thursday March 11 at 6:30pm.

Individuals attending the lecture are welcome to bring an oriental rug from their home for a free evaluation. Tickets for the lecture Oriental Rugs: the Art and the Market are $3.

Bedoukian and Summers will discuss the special hand-knotting and hand-weaving techniques that make an oriental rug authentic and explain the intricate pattern designs that make each oriental rug a unique work of art. In addition, Bedoukian and Summers will shed light on the present market conditions that determine the value of various oriental rugs.

Bedoukian is active in oriental rug associations in the United States and Canada. He is treasurer of the Armenian Rugs Society, past president of the Montreal Oriental Rug Club and The Quebec Carpet and Textile Society. Bedoukian is also the only appraiser in Montreal certified by the Oriental Rug Retailer's Association (ORRA).

Bedoukian works side-by-side with his wife, Janice Summers, who is also an internationally-respected authority on oriental rugs. Summers has more than 30 years of experience as a retailer, collector, author and lecturer, and is the author of four books and numerous articles on oriental carpets. She has taught courses on the subject at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Memphis State University, and the University of Akron. She has lectured in Canada and throughout the United States as well as participating in many international oriental carpet conferences.

When they are not travelling around the globe in pursuit of unique rugs, Bedoukian and Summers run their store, Ararat Rug Company, in the Plateau borough of Montreal.
