If you can read it quickly, you can have it now: Côte Saint-Luc library launches new Fast Reads service

Côte Saint-Luc, August 20, 2010 – The Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library will launch its new Fast Reads collection on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 10am.

Books in the Fast Reads collection are popular titles that can only be borrowed for seven days instead of the standard 21 days. Fast Reads books can't be renewed, and no “holds,” or reservations, can be put on them.

“It is sort of luck of the draw because a popular book a person has been eagerly awaiting can randomly appear on the Fast Reads shelf,” Assistant Library Director Janine West said. “This is great news for someone who will then get to bypass a lengthy waiting list for a book for which they may have already been waiting.”

The Fast Reads books will be found in the new book area and their covers will be marked with a bright yellow Fast Reads banner. Members can borrow a maximum of two Fast Reads books at one time.

To encourage members to return the Fast Reads books on time, the late fine will be $2 for each day the book is late. Fast Reads books cannot be renewed. Library members who like to take their time with books will still be able to put their names on a waiting list for these popular titles.

“Fast or motivated readers do not need three weeks to read a book,” said Councillor Sam Goldbloom, the council member responsible for the library. “If a book is popular, they would rather read it in seven days than wait six months to get it.”

This service is perfect for someone who only takes a day or two to get through a book.

Fast Reads collections have already been successful in helping to curtail long waiting lists for new best-sellers in other public libraries, such as Westmount and Pointe Claire. In many cases, it also means that public libraries will buy fewer copies of popular selections since the waiting lists for these titles are subsequently scaled down. In the end, it is a win-win situation for both library and borrower.

The Eleanor London Côte Saint-Luc Public Library is located at 5851 Cavendish Blvd. and is open from 10am to 10pm every day. For more information, call the library at 514-485-6900 or visit www.elcslpl.org.
