Côte Saint-Luc offers residents free compostable bags for leaf and yard waste

Côte Saint-Luc, October 26, 2010 – Côte Saint-Luc residents can put leaves and other garden waste directly in their brown bin or in compostable bags, but not in regular plastic bags.

“Again this year, Côte Saint-Luc is offering every household four free compostable bags that can be filled and placed next to the brown bin on collection day,” said Councillor Dida Berku, the council member responsible for environmental issues. “We cannot accept leaves in regular plastic bags because those kinds of bags do not decompose and contaminate the organic waste we send to the composting facility.”

Bags are available at City Hall (5801 Cavendish Blvd.) weekdays between 8:30am and 4:30pm and at the Public Works Department (7001 Mackle Rd.) weekdays between 8am and 4pm. Proof of residency is required.

Residents can also purchase additional compostable bags from Côte Saint-Luc or from retailers. The bags must be 100 percent compostable made from natural materials such as cornstarch or paper. For more information about compostable bags, visit www.cotesaintluc.org/brownbin.
