Water sampling program 2022
Between July 1 and September 30, 2022, the City of Côte Saint-Luc will be collecting water samples from single-family homes and duplexes built before 1976. Many homes built before 1976 have water service lines made of lead. To check whether your single-family home or duplex was built before 1976, verify the age on our database.
If your home was built before 1976, then you are eligible to book an appointment for water sampling. If your home was built in 1976 or later, if we have already performed the water sampling, or if we have confirmed that the water service line (public section and private section) is made of copper, then you are not eligible to book an appointment.
Goals
The goals of this water sampling program are to:
- Test water for lead (and copper) levels.
- Provide the City data to plan the multi-year service line replacement program.
This is a free service. If you don’t have access to a computer or for any questions about the process, contact [email protected]. The reservation system opens April 18. Reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
If your home was built before 1976, book an appointment for water sampling.
Safety protocol
A technician from Simo will enter your home wearing the personal protective equipment, including masks and gloves. The technician will maintain a physical distance. We ask that your wear a mask during the visit.
How we collect the sample
This is how the water sampling procedure works. The technician will turn on the water at your sink (usually, in the kitchen), let it run for 5 minutes, and then turn it off. The technician will then ask you to not use any water in your home for 30 minutes (sinks, toilets, washing machines, etc.). The technician will then leave your home. Once 30 minutes have passed, the technician will return. He or she will then collect samples of water from your sink. The technician will be in your home for approximately 10 to 15 minutes during this step. The technician will then disinfect all surfaces touched, and leave your home.
Results
All samples are sent to an accredited laboratory. You will receive a letter from Côte Saint-Luc showing your results this autumn.
Water filters
As a precaution, and until the water service lines made of lead are replaced, we suggest that all homes built before 1976 use water filters, which can cut exposure to lead in tap water and reduce health risks to a minimum. Côte Saint-Luc offers two rebates for water filters.
