Aquatics: Children’s Group Lessons

Due to Covid-19 the following  rules will apply to group lessons for the Fall 2020 season: 

  1. These classes are offered to Côte Saint-Luc residents only.
  2. Showers are  mandatory before entering the pool.
  3. Children who are unable to swim on their own must be accompanied by a Parent/Guardian into the water for the duration of the lesson . Instructors will have no direct contact (touch) with the  children.
  4.  There will be no waiting on the pool deck. Only parents who need to be in the water with their child will be allowed on the pool deck. 
  5. Switching levels will not be possible, please ensure to sign up your child for the appropriate level. 
  6. If registration is insufficient,  some classes may be cancelled. 

Baby Swim With Marie (Age: 0 to 4 months)

Getting baby used to the water early is important for safety and will build baby’s confidence in the water. It’s fun exercise for both child and parent.

Starfish (Age: 4 to 12 months)

To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goals are to help babies experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/ caregiver. Parent participant required.

Duck (Age: 12 to 24 months)

Swimmers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements. The parent/caregiver also learns age-specific water safety. Parent participant required.

Sea Turtle (Age: 24 to 36 months)

Swimmers learn, through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a  buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks.Parent participant required.

Sea Otter (Age: 3 to 5 years)

All skills are assisted by the Parent or Instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. Parent participant required.

Prerequisites: Can function in a group setting without parental guidance.

Learning: Swim 2 metres, further develop basic floats and increase the distance of their front and back glides. Front swim and roll-over glide, jump into chest-deep water, and learn to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Sunfish (Age: 3 to 5 years)

Prerequisites: Can complete a front glide (face in the water) for 3 seconds; both front and back floats for 3 seconds; jump into chest deep water, recover and swim 2 metres, all unassisted.

Learning: Swim 5 meters, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glides with kick, develop their roll-over glides, side glides, front swim, and learn deepwater skills.

Crocodile (Age: 3 to 5 years)

Prerequisites: Can complete front/back glides and front/back floats, unassisted, for 5 seconds; jump into chest-deep water, recover, and swim for 5 metres, all unassisted.

Learning: Swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform dolphin kick, begin using rhythmic breathing, practice kicking drills and increase swimming distance to 10 metres.

Learning: Front and back swim for 10 metres, developing their flutter kick and swim a distance of 15 metres.

Prerequisites: Comfortably move and float with assistance, function in a group without parental assistance.

Learning: Orientation to water and the pool area, work on floats, glides and kicking. Build their endurance by working on the 5 metre front swim.

Learning: Propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface, front swim (5m), Flutter kick (10m), distance swim (10m), learn about deep water activities and proper use of a personal flotation device.

Prerequisites: At ease in deep water, can breathe rhythmically 10 times, front/back glides with kick (5m), and swim continuously (10m).

Learning: Introduction to diving, making wise choices about where and when to swim, building strength and endurance in flutter kick, and a 15-metre swim.

Prerequisites: Front crawl (5m), arms recovering above water, front/back glides with kick (10m) and continuous swim (15m). 

Learning: Front crawl (10m), back swim with shoulder roll (15m), kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water), endurance building via 25m swim, and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits.

Learning: Introduction to back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. Endurance swim development (50m).

Prerequisites: Front and back crawl (15m), whip kick on back (5m), kneeling dive and swim continuously (50m).

Learning: Refines front crawl with focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), Introduction to elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, rescue of others with throwing aids, front dive, tread in deep water for 1½ minutes. Build endurance through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Prerequisites: front crawl and back crawl (25m), coordinated elementary backstroke (15m), and continuous swim (75m).

Learning: Build skills and endurance for front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m), elementary back stroke (25m), introduction to whip kick on the front, learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Increase endurance to a 150m swim.

Prerequisites: Swim front crawl and back crawl (50m), swim elementary backstroke (25m), whip kick on front (15m), and swim continuously (75m).

Learning: Introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives, treading water using eggbeater kick for 3 minutes, build endurance over a 300m swim, front and back crawl (75m) and standing shallow dives. Learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and how to perform rescue breathing on children and adults.

Prerequisites: Front crawl (75m), back crawl (75m), elementary backstroke (25m), breaststroke (25m), head first sculling on back (10m), perform a stride jump; continuous swim (300m).

Learning: Refines front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary backstroke (50m), and breast stroke (25m). Encourage swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins), e, head-first surface dives, and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance iis built through a 400m swim.

Red Cross, level 10 (Age: 6 to 13 years)

Prerequisites: Front crawl (100m) and back crawl (100m), elementary backstroke (25m), breaststroke (25m), continuous swim (400m). 

Learning: Sun safety, rescue of others from ice, headfirst and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim. This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary backstroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m).
