Foods in the freezer

In general, frozen foods can be kept for 48 hours in a freezer that is in good condition and filled to capacity, as long as it is left closed.

In a half-filled freezer, the shelf life is 24 hours.

You should also consider the temperature of the room where the freezer is located. The cooler the room, the more the internal temperature of the freezer will be maintained.

As for the freezer unit of a refrigerator, its ability to keep food frozen is much less. Defrosting food in the event of a breakdown is therefore faster.

Once the electricity has been restored, check the defrosting status of the food.

  • Partially thawed foods with frost on the surface of their packaging: they can be refrozen if the center of the food is still hard.
  • Thawed raw foods whose temperature has remained at 4°C or less: they can be cooked immediately for quick consumption or refrozen once cooked.
  • Fully thawed foods such as hard cheese blocks, baked goods (bread, muffins, bread dough, plain cakes, fruit pies, cookies), pasteurized fruit juices and fruit: can be refrozen if the containers are intact.
  • Perishable foods that have thawed completely: discard them if they have been exposed to a temperature above 4°C. Here are some foods considered perishable: meat, poultry, fish and seafood, dairy products, eggs, prepared meals containing these raw or cooked foods.

Remember that it is not safe to take food that shows signs of spoilage or looks suspicious. If in doubt, it is better to throw them away.
