Resolution in support of the people of Ukraine

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE


WHEREAS on February 24, 2022, Russian forces, enabled by Belarus, launched its unprovoked full-scale renewed invasion of a peaceful, independent country, Ukraine;

WHEREAS the people of Cote Saint-Luc have been moved by the inspirational leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the resolve of people of Ukraine to defend their democracy;

WHEREAS the United Nations estimates there could end up being as many as 4 million Ukrainian refugees displaced by the war;

MOVED BY COUNCILLOR DIDA BERKU
SECONDED BY COUNCILLOR ANDEE SHUSTER

AND RESOLVED:
“THAT the City of Cote Saint-Luc supports the people of Ukraine and condemns the hostilities of the Russian Federation;

THAT the City of Cote Saint-Luc urge fellow Canadian municipalities to adopt resolutions condemning the actions of the Russian Federation and supporting Ukraine;

THAT the City encourages residents to donate to their preferred registered charity in support of Ukrainian civilians, including the Canadian Red Cross, Federation CJA, among others, in addition to local clothing drives such as those organized by the Ukrainian community of Montreal;

THAT the City Council calls on the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec to assist and welcome those fleeing the war into our country and offer robust military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine;

THAT this resolution be circulated to the Prime Minister of Canada; the Premier of Quebec; Anthony Housefather, MP; David Birnbaum, MNA; the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM); and the Union des municipalites du Quebec (UMQ).”
